let’s celebrate with bubbles! … if t could drink bubbles …
t says: I know it’s been a while since we’ve had a substantive post. Sorry! I forgot to put up our “we’re going on break” post that we typically do every year around this time – oops!
In any case, I promise that we’ll get back up and running – we’ve just been busy eating at the same places we’ve always eaten (e.g. Talula’s Garden at New Year’s … they totally crushed it), drinking wines with the usual crew (look for our twitter sidebar off to the right, coming soon!), and working hard (booooo!).
We wish you all a great new year. Bring it on, 2014!
Love,
the entire adsz cast
P.S. In the meantime, amuse yourself with this mixed drink recipe I found elsewheres online … basically, if I could drink bubbles, I’d totally be drinking this:
Chocolate Black Velvet
(From Mast Brother’s Chocolate: A Family Cookbook.)
1/2 ounce chocolate syrup (see below*).
1 ounce stout beer
3 ounces champagne
1 dash Orange bitters
1 twist of orange zest
-Pour chocolate syrup into champagne glass
-add stout.
-pour champagne slowly over the back of a metal spoon into the glass
-add bitters
-garnish with orange zest.
*Chocolate Syrup
In a saucepan, mix 2 cups water, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cocoa powder, 1 ounce dark chocolate, and the seeds scraped from 1/3 of a vanilla bean. Bring it to a boil, then take off the heat, strain, and let cool.
a says: You make the syrup, I can bring the rest. And I’m pretty sure we’d all drink this, even v!
rest in pieces
t says: Today was a sad day …
I had been transporting a bottle from our home in Philly to our NJ cellar. And, right before the steps into the house, the neoprene bag I had this bottle of wine in slipped out of my hand and struck the hard concrete. Having dropped many a bottle before, I merely cursed my luck and bent over to pick up the evidence of my clumsiness. But then … it started to bleed … my precious bottle had started to bleed its beautiful fermented grape juice all over the sidewalk. I looked sown in horror … speechless … for a second not believing this was real, rather a horrible nightmare from which I only needed to awaken. The emotions that filled me ranged wildly, from anger at my loss to frustration that I could have been so dumb to sadness, as Dominus is the g & t anniversary wine (we’ve been buying a bottle a year since we got married), and now it was gone. And after uber-critic Robert Parker re-rated the wine this past month to a perfect 100, it’s harder to find [at a reasonable price] than a needle in a stack of needles guarded by porcupines.
Oh well, no use crying over spilt wine and shards of glass … no matter how much I want to …
EDIT:
I told you about how my butter-fingers caused a catastrophic loss of a bottle of wine. Forced to move on, I filled in the space in my cellar and deleted the bottle from my cellartracker. What’s done was done … or was it? This past weekend, sr and ha did the unexpected … they surprised me with a replacement. I’m not sure how they pulled it off, as neither really knows about wine, and, as I had mentioned, it had become “harder to find than a needle in a stack of needles guarded by porcupines” … I’m not sure how they did it, but they did (I imagine it would first involve a magnet to pull out the needles, and then some sort of high-speed optical sorter). So here’s a big online thank you to mom and dad! Thanks!
dinner of champions
t says: Tonight, I was hungry, so I peered into the fridge. We had enough for the following well-balanced meal:
What is “Jersey Cake”? Well, for starters, no one actually calls it “Jersey Cake” – I just needed something to call it in the photo. Be that as it may, this cake oozes awesomeness, so it deserves some explanation. It’s form this small bakery in southern NJ called Terrigno’s. g’s best high school friend frequently gets their family’s birthday cakes from them (actually, I believe they might be the only bakery they get cakes from). Today was her son’s second birthday, so they got some cake. And what a cake it was! This leftover slab that you see is a fudge-chocolate frosted layer cake, where the cake is banana cake (kinda like banana bread – not just artificial banana flavoring), and the inner stripes are chocolate-peanut-butter … and it. is. crazy. Oh – yea – and there are chocolate chips scattered throughout. I totally just had a dinner of moz’ and kale just so I could eat more cake …
mushroom bomb
t says: So I dashed into Talula’s Daily this morning and while I was in line ordering a slew of sweet foods, a quiche caught my eye. Or is it a frittata? Who cares. It’s something with a LOT of stuff in it, including mushrooms, brie, and kale. I figured, “If I eat this first, maybe it’ll balance out all the sweet stuff I’m ordering?”.
Best.
Decision.
Ever.
I don’t even really like these egg things that much … but this thing melted my face.

a face melting quiche? i mean it’s so good i almost feel guilty that g’s not here. (But then I remember she’s in san fran right now and ate at Flour + Water last night … and I feel less guilty) But in actuality, the mushroom density might be too much for g to handle, so it’s ok. And there are no pumpkin scones left today. And no lemon ginger either. So g, it’s ok – you’re not missing much … and I promise I’m not having any fun without you.
